As a young man Sterling joined the JR ROTC. He was an honor student throughout school and an avid history buff. He was always eager to help or serve those in need. He was a loyal, dedicated, compassionate and ambitious person who valued family and friends. He loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, camping, BBQ-ing and being with friends. He was a mentor and hero to many and loved children and animals. Sterling fulfilled his childhood dreams when he attained a pilot's license before he could drive. In his memory, Helmet Peak Fire Department named their newest fire engine "STERLING". Sterling had a very special closeness and relationship with his mother who raised him as a single and dedicated "Mom". Sterling's goal in life was always to help others, and as an organ donor he continues to help save and preserve life, even through his death.
