George A. Hernandez, 58, of Tucson, AZ was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away July 17,2015 after a long and hard struggle with pancreatic and prostate cancer. Born May 21,1957 in Douglas, AZ, he is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary Ellen Hernandez and children, Tina (Daniel) Castaneda (grandchildren Sophia, Vivian, and Camellia), George (Kimber) Hernandez Jr. (grandchildren Kaitlyn and George III), and Enrique Hernandez. George is also survived by his mother, Teresa Hernandez, and 6 brothers and 7 sisters, Sally (Dennis) Gooze, Yolanda (Hank) McNabb, Evelyn (Ron) Bishop, Frank Hernandez, Nora (Frank) Barraza, Erma (Albert) Parra, Daniel (Frances) Hernandez, David Hernandez, Ruben (Monica) Hernandez, Debra Hernandez, TJ Altamirano, Jessie Hernandez, Jimmy Hernandez, and a large extended family and friends. George is preceded in death by his Sister, Dora Hall and his father Francisco (Blackie) Hernandez. George was the father figured in everyone's life and was often called "Dad" by close family and friends. He was a loving brother-in-law, uncle, friend and co-worker. George retired in 2007 from the Tucson Airport Authority after 31 years working in field maintenance. However, this did not slow him down. He pursued many other interests including truck driving, hotel maintenance, and big rig training. He was actively involved in the American Legion, McDermott post #7 where he held many positions with the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. A strong believer in giving back to the community, he helped organize many events to benefit those in need, especially Veterans and children. George had passion for life and his family. You would often find him riding his motorcycle with his wife, family, and friends, enjoying the open road. George also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He organized many family camping trips and was often known travel spontaneously with family and friends. George was a loving and strong man who cared deeply for everyone around him. George, although we will miss you, we will always remember you with love. The viewing will be at Martinez Funeral Chapels, 2580 S. 6th Ave. on Friday July 24,2015 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a rosary at 7:00pm. The Mass will be at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1220 S. 6th Ave at 10:00am. Followed by the burial which will be held at Holy Hope Cemetery 3535 N. Oracle Rd.
