Charles Anthony Martínez was born on October 23, 1947 and passed away on October 15, 2023 after a lengthy illness. Family and friends called him Charlie or Chuck. He was the son of Irene Martínez Díaz and Luis Green Díaz. He was born into a pioneer family. The Martínez and Verdugo families settled in Tucson in the early 1880’s.
The Martínez was originally from Spain, and the Verdugo family was from Chile. The Martínez settled in Barrio Anita, while the Verdugo-Cruz family settled in the Presidio district near downtown Tucson. Charlie’s generation settled in Barrio Hollywood and attended Davis Elementary School, John Spring Junior High School, and Tucson High School. When Charlie was a young child, the family lived in Pascua Village and then on North Yuma Road in the Estevan Park area.
Charlie is survived by his children, Charlie and Rachel; siblings, Rosemary Ebarb of El Mirage, AZ; Ronaldo (Jane) Cruz of Irvington, NY: John Díaz, Rebecca Salmen, and Luis Díaz of Tucson; and Robert Díaz of Denver, CO. In addition to his siblings, Charlie leaves five grandchildren: Alexis, Leanna, Matthew, Maiah, and Christian as well as a great-grandaughter, Ayva. Charlie was preceded in death by his younger brother, Frank Robredo.
