Eli Faustin Leyba, born October 25, 1940 in Silver City, New Mexico, left his physical body on July 23, 2022. Eli was preceded in death by his parents, Eli Cruz Leyba and Prudencia Roybal Leyba; Sister Hortencia “Ruth” Abels; Brother Juan “Johnny” Leyba; and, most recently his youngest son, Cristobal “Chris.” Eli is survived by his wife of 58 years, Manuela “Nellie”; brother Gilberto (Clara); son Gregory (Yolanda); daughter Consuelo; and, daughter Marina (Miguel). Eli is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Fulfilling a childhood dream, Eli joined the armed forces at 17 and spent 37 years dedicated to serving his country. In his youth he obtained a pilot’s license, and flying over Nellie’s house to wave “hello” while they were dating, was among the many things that won her heart. Along with being an ever-attentive husband, Eli’s life revolved around his four children. Duty and honor being foremost to Eli, he lived each day a strong example for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had many adventures in his youth, flying, skydiving, and exploring wilderness. He enjoyed carpentry, mechanics, gardening, poetry, literature, film, philosophy, politics, and physics. He was always on the ready for long philosophical conversations or fun political speculation. His strong appreciation for nature was passed down through so many camping trips and picnics in the deserts and mountains of the greater southwestern United States. Dearly loved and missed, he will remain in our hearts forever.
