Hugo Villanueva

Hugo Villanueva Cabrera (64) passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020 surrounded by his wife of 45 years, Ana Maria Villanueva and their seven children – Hugo Villanueva (Sarah), Gladys Rice (Malik), Ildefonso “Poncho” Villanueva, Ana Karina Villanueva, Margarita Marquez (Alexander), Sylvia Villanueva (Pedro Alonso) & Ernestina Jazmine Villanueva. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren – Alicia, David, Malik, Masai, Cynthia, Sanchez, Rasheed, Alexander Jr., Lilliana, Andrés, Angel, Nevaeh, Aidan & Nathanael. He also leaves behind his siblings Isabel Bautista, Pedro Villanueva, Yolanda Rodriguez, Ageo Villanueva, Pablo Villanueva, Elia Jarquin & Arely Fimbres and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hugo and Ana Maria immigrated from the small town of Santa Maria Del Tule in Oaxaca, Mexico to the United States (Tucson, AZ) in 1980. They both gained employment with Air Systems Components, Inc., where they manufactured air distribution products, before opening their family restaurant La Guelguetza in 2001. Due to Hugo’s declining health he took early retirement in 2019.

Although Hugo was grateful for all the opportunities the United States afforded him and his family he never forgot about his humble beginnings and was proud to be Oaxaqueño!

Hugo was a hard worker and a jack of all-trades, no project was too big or too small. He was reliable and his children knew they could always count on him when needed. He was smart, often taking trade classes in English, and earned various certificates. Hugo was welcoming, kind and charitable. Hugo opened his home to friends and strangers alike.

Hugo enjoyed woodworking, dancing, cooking and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid boxing and soccer fan. Hugo’s family will miss his sense of humor, smile and knack for giving nicknames to all.

Hugo is preceded in death by his parents Ildefonso & Margarita Villanueva, sister Bonifacia Reyes & brother Jose Villanueva.
