Dr. Joe Anthony Escalada, also known as “Chimpo”, died on May 27, 2023, at the age of 78. Surrounded by family, he passed away at home in his native town of Nogales, Arizona. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Harriet Escalada, three children: Anna-Sophia Escalada York, Jose Manuel Escalada and Helena Lucilla Escalada; brother Simon J. Escalada and sister Domitila Escalada, four grandchildren, as well as numerous other family and friends. Joe started playing football in elementary school and went on to play for the Nogales High School Varsity Team where he was named All-State Class A in 1961 and 1962. He then enrolled at the University of Arizona on a football scholarship where he played as a lineman for the Varsity Team in 1964, 1965, and 1966. After studying botany and agronomy at the University of Arizona, he earned a PhD in agronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus under the guidance of Professor Dale Smith. Joe and Harriet started a farming business in Phoenix, and managed it for 20 years. In 1996 Joe moved back to Nogales with his wife and kids to spend more time with the extended family.
Though he has physically left us, Chimpo will be missed and remembered by all those whose heart he touched.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Nogales, Arizona.
