Jose Yebra, affectionately known as “El Chiltepin,” was a fixture of Tucson’s mariachi scene for over 40 years, captivating audiences at La Fuente Restaurant since the early 1960s. Born into the grueling life of a “Bracero,” Jose sought an escape from the back-breaking labor of harvesting crops. At 20, he realized that mariachi music would be his path to a better life, and he began his career in Stockton, California in 1961.
His journey quickly led him to San Francisco, where he joined Mariachi Los Cardinales de Tijuana, led by José Santana, the father of rock icon Carlos Santana. In 1963, Jose experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear with Elvis Presley in the film Fun in Acapulco. Later that year, he accompanied Mexico’s legendary singer Javier Solis at the Million Dollar Theater, adding another highlight to his growing career.
Jose’s musical journey continued in Phoenix, where he performed with Mariachi Alma Jaliscience at “El Calderon” before making his way to Tucson and settling into his long-standing role at La Fuente. Over the decades, he became a mentor to many young musicians. His influence also extended to youth mariachi groups like Mariachi Milagro, Mariachi Sonido de Mexico, and Mariachi Chaparral, where he instilled a love for the traditional music he holds dear.
His trumpet-playing and infectious joy were an inspiration to everyone who came to listen. His influence in the Mariachi community stretches far and wide and will live on for years to come.
