Mario Angel Morales

August 19, 1958 — April 7, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mario Angel Morales, affectionately known as "Toro," who left us on April 7, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona. Born on August 19, 1958, in Nogales, Arizona, Mario dedicated his life to serving his community and brought joy to everyone around him. His legacy will forever resonate through the lives he touched and protected.

Mario began his journey in law enforcement in 1983, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his role and to the safety of those he served. After a brief hiatus to pursue a career in produce in 1988, his passion for law enforcement brought him back to the Santa Cruz Sheriff Office in 2000. His tenacity and expertise led him to the Nogales Police Department in 2008, and later, in 2020, he returned as the Under Sheriff at the Sheriff Office until his well-deserved retirement in 2023.

An alumnus of Nogales High School, Mario was both tactical in and out of his professional life, emulating the very essence of a dedicated public servant. His heart, however, extended beyond the badge; he cared deeply for his community and his fellow officers, affectionately referring to them as his "brothers and sisters in blue." This care extended into every aspect of his life, visible in the laughter that filled his home and the warmth he shared with his family.

Mario's vibrant personality shone through in every moment spent with his loved ones. He had a particular penchant for gathering at Native Grill and Wings, where laughter and storytelling were as abundant as the food. He enjoyed going shooting and often found solace at the gym, but above all, he cherished the time spent with his beloved wife, Danitza Morales, and their children. Their bond was a testament to life’s simple pleasures, punctuated by Mario's unique ability to bring joy and humor to all situations.

He is survived by his wife Danitza; sons Arsenio "Lenny" Morales, Mario Angel Morales Jr., and Martin Medina (Cassandra Contreras); daughters Ana Lourdes Morales, Priscilla Medina, Jennifer Guevarra (Mark Guevarra), and Stephanie Medina (David Lopez); his brothers Manuel "Manny" Gerardo (Judie Gerardo) and Miguel "Mike" Gerardo (Annabelle Gerardo); his sister Martina Martinez (Rene Martinez); his parents, Manuel and Margarita Gerardo; and a beloved brood of ten grandchildren who each brought a special brightness to his life.

Mario was preceded in death by his father, Angel Morales, a loss he bore with grace and reflected upon in his family’s enduring strength.

As we gather to honor his life and love, services will be held on April 15, 2025, at Martinez Funeral Chapels in Nogales, beginning with visitation at 10:00 AM, followed by a rosary at 11:00 AM. A Mass celebrating his extraordinary life will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 1:30 PM.

Mario Angel Morales was more than a dedicated officer; he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished friend. His spirit will remain alive within the hearts of all who knew him, a steadfast reminder of the importance of community, love, and laughter.
