Olga R. Valdez, a beloved figure in Nogales, Arizona, was born on May 22, 1936, and passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025. An exceptional individual, she dedicated her life to serving her community, first as a school bus driver and then as an educator and Parent Liaison for Nogales Unified School District #1. Her commitment to the children of Nogales went beyond mere profession; it was a heartfelt vocation. In recognition of her tireless service, she was honored to be a member of the Nogales Hall of Fame in 2010.
Known fondly as Nana "O," Olga's spirit was as vibrant as her favorite color, orange. Her warmth and generosity radiated throughout her life, and her home was always a welcoming space filled with laughter and love. A devoted family member, Olga cherished spending time with her husband, Heriberto Valdez, their sons Robert Valdez (Elena), Heriberto Martin Valdez, and Jose Luis Valdez (Marcela), and their daughters Pearl Alvarez (Jesus) and Barbara Renteria (George). She took immense pride in her family, leaving behind a loving legacy of 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
Olga’s unwavering support for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren shone through in her enthusiastic attendance at their activities, where she could frequently be seen cheering proudly from the sidelines. Beyond her family, Olga was passionate about baseball, often praying to San Sebastian for all the athletes. Her kindness extended naturally into her work on the city council and as vice mayor, where she volunteered for numerous initiatives, including organizing the Nogales High School Senior Project and helping students in H-13.
Olga was known not only for her commitment to community service but also for her vivacious personality. She loved to dance, listen to music, and indulge in her favorite foods, including pozole, chicken tacos, and bean burros, often savoring a cold Coke with lemon. Her joyful presence made every gathering memorable, lighting up the room with her radiant smile.
She is predeceased by her parents, Eugenia Velasquez and Jose Luis Rosas, and her brother, Eduardo Rosas. Their loss was profound, yet Olga’s enduring spirit continues to live on through her family and all whose lives she touched.
The community and her family honor Olga’s remarkable life and legacy with a Prayer Service to be held on March 15, 2025, at 12:00 PM, followed by a Mass at 12:30 PM. Both events will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at 272 N Rodriguez St, Nogales, AZ 85621.
Olga R. Valdez will be remembered not only for her numerous accomplishments but also for the love she shared, the smiles she brought, and the compassionate heart that guided her every action. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the Nogales High School Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund.
