Pedro Covarrubias, a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully in Tucson, Arizona, on December 17, 2024, at the age of 81. Born the youngest of 17 brothers and sisters on October 19, 1943, in La Sidra, Colima, México, Pedro was a man of tremendous strength and unwavering dedication to his family and work.
Throughout his life, Pedro demonstrated an incredible work ethic which began as a part-owner of his family’s coffee plantation. At the age of 26, he embarked on a new chapter by immigrating to the United States, where he found his footing as a foreman at a furniture manufacturing company in Los Angeles, California. In 1990, he relocated to Tucson, Arizona, taking on various maintenance jobs before retiring as custodian from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. His hands shaped lives, both through his labor and the love he poured into every endeavor.
Pedro's dedication extended far beyond the workplace. He was a steadfast provider who always placed the needs of his family before his own, often sharing what little he had with sincerity and an open heart. In a world that sometimes prioritizes material wealth, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life and sought happiness in the time spent with those he loved. He never shied away from being present for sport events, school activities, and particularly cherished moments with his grandchildren, offering continual support and encouragement for their dreams.
Those who knew Pedro will remember him for his quiet yet profound love. His tender nature radiated a comforting presence that enveloped his family, making them feel secure emotionally, physically, and spiritually. He had an extraordinary way of imparting wisdom, especially to his sons-in-law, teaching them the importance of caring for his daughters with the same loving spirit. While he acknowledged his imperfections, Pedro was a man firmly committed to fostering faith within his family, believing in the value of striving to be better each day.
His enthusiasm for craftsmanship showcased his resourcefulness and talent, whether building furniture, home additions, or creating memorable spaces like a walk-in dollhouse for his daughters and later, a playground for his grandchildren. Pedro was never too tired to lend a helping hand, reminding all around him of the true meaning of hard work.
Pedro took great pleasure in the simple joys of life, relishing his favorite meals of corn tortillas and queso fresco, alongside cooking delicious chilaquiles for his beloved grandkids. Mornings were often filled with the aroma of black coffee entwined with the sweetness of pan dulce, creating a warm start to the day. He was a warm host, always ensuring others were fed and included at the table.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Rosalba Covarrubias; his three beloved daughters, Aracely Ayala, Rosalba Mada, and Xochitl Gonzalez; and his cherished grandchildren, Nathalie, Mussette, Lisa Marie, Hector Ernesto, Alejandro, Andres Alfredo, and Pedro Damian. Additionally, he leaves behind his sons-in-law, Julio Ayala, Alejandro Mada, and Alfredo Gonzalez, who were honored to share in his family.
As we gather to honor the incredible life of Pedro Covarrubias, we celebrate the legacy of love, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to family that he leaves behind. His spirit will remain in the hearts of all who were touched by his gentle soul.
