On May 19, 2023, at 6:43 p.m., Ralph S. Romero was called home to serve an even higher purpose. Ralph “Mr. Cholla” Romero earned his wings after a courageous 4-year and 2-month fight against Colorectal Cancer in the arms of his daughter and grandson. Ralph was born in Tucson, Arizona, and grew up in the City of South Tucson. Mr. Romero was survived by his only child, Bernadette Romero (John Avilez), Grandson Julian Avilez, and Step-Grandchildren Marisia Gamez (Miguel Gamez), Diego Avilez, and Selicia Avilez. Step-Great Grandchildren Diego Gamez, Miguelito Gamez and Idalis Estrella, Nephew Andrew Perez (Lissa Perez), Godson Renee Torres, Antonio Sifuentes, Damien Kane, and Brother-in-law Anthony Perez. Preceded in death by his parents Ernesto & Olga Romero, Brothers Francisco and Fernando Romero, and Sister Delia Kane. Ralph also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and an abundance of friends that were like family. The Cholla High School and TUSD community from the early 1980s to 2022, generations of students and families, co-workers, and his pool, church, and Pinnacle family. Ralph enjoyed watching and coaching softball, inspiring youth to be a better version of themselves, working at Basis Primary where his grandson attended, and ultimately enjoyed playing pool several evenings a week. Mr. Romero devoted many hours to spending time with his grandson, Julian, who was his pride and joy. Ralph’s years of dedication to youth sports, his mentorship, and his tough love approach are what set him apart and landed him recognitions such as being named Mr. Cholla and the CHS Varsity Softball field named and dedicated to him. With a smile on his face, Ralph would stop at nothing to lend a hand, including to strangers, and would give his last dollar to anyone in need. Ralph left this physical life as an Angel on earth and reported to the gates of heaven to be a soldier for our Lord and forever watch over his family and friends.
