Robert Griego
October 3, 1946- August 10, 2021
Green Valley, Arizona
With his wife by his side and surrounded by loved ones Robbie passed peacefully on August 10th in Green Valley, AZ. Robbie was the youngest of 5 children, born to Eloy and Emma Griego in Albuquerque, NM.
From an early age Robbie had a penchant for adventure that would define him for the rest of his life. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably. He then went to New Mexico Highlands University where he met Neecie who would become his wife. For the next 50 years they would raise a family while traveling the world together. After graduating Robbie’s country called him once again into service to which he responded spending the next 31 years in the US State Department. He lived and represented his country in Nigeria, Poland, Germany, Yugoslavia, Jordan, Papua New Guinea, Bolivia, Belgium, and Mexico. While living overseas he embraced local cultures and experienced as much as he could in those nations. Never one to shy away from creating memories he lived a life many of us only ever read about in books. Negotiating prices for goods in Turkish markets for days, running with the Hash House Harriers to the top of the Chacaltaya, Bolivia the highest ski resort in the world. He never ran out of incredible stories of his time in the State Department. After his retirement he continued to support the nation working as a government contractor in Sierra Vista, AZ.
When he finally retired a 2nd time Robbie kept himself busy working on house projects, being enthralled with a good book, or continuing to learn new skills all the way into his 70’s. However, his best skill was making strangers, friends, and family laugh with his warm sense of humor and keen ability to listen to those around him.
He is survived by his wife Neecie, son Carlos, his wife Gina and their two children, daughter Hollie her husband Andre and their two children, son Joaquin.
Robbie will be remembered as a patriot to his country, a warm-hearted friend, the most loving father to his children and grandchildren, and a dedicated caring husband to his wife whom he loved deeply.
A memorial will be held in his honor Friday August 13th at the Rio Rico Community Center, 6pm.
