Dr. William "Bill" Harry Berdine passed away on February 14,2025, in Amado, Arizona, just one day shy of his 81st birthday.
Born February 15, 1944, in Warren, Pennsylvania as one of twelve children, Bill pursued a lifelong passion for education and advocacy. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in ancient and medieval history from Lycoming College before continuing his studies at Pennsylvania State University, where he obtained both Masters and Doctorate in education with a focus on mental retardation personnel/teacher preparation. His dedication to the field of special education shaped a distinguished career that left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.
Bill served as a professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kentucky College of Education, where he also held the role of Department Chair. His leadership extended beyond the university as he became president of Higher Education Consortium of Special Education (HECSE), an organization representing special education leadership programs at major institutions across the United States. His expertise and commitment to advancing special education were further recognized when he was named to the President's White House Commission on Excellence in Special Education.
Throughout his career, Bill was deeply involved in research and program development. He served as principal investigator on a federally funded demonstration project, The UK Engaging Differences Project, which sought to disseminate research on Best Practices for diverse student populations. His work extended internationally through the Partners of the Americas Fellowship in International Development Fellows IV program, fostering professional collaborations and friendships throughout Central and South America.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill found great joy in spending time with his family and friends. He shared 35 wonderful years with his wife, Stacie Anne Meyer. He is also survived by his daughter Lara Berdine; Son Michael Berdine (Amy) and grandson Reece; all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
A passionate gardener, Bill dedicated much of his time to cultivating beauty in his community. As a member of the Gardening Committee in Esperanza Estates, he played an instrumental role in developing several pocket parks within the neighborhood. His expertise was further honored through training with the Pima County Master Gardener's Program, and he was an active member of the Green Valley Gardeners, also serving one term as president.
Bill had an adventurous spirit that led him to embrace outdoor activities such as boating, kayaking, hiking, and exploring new places. He was also an accomplished cook who delighted in trying new cuisines and sharing meals with loved ones.
Bill's legacy is one of dedication - to education, to community service, to family, and to embracing life's many adventures. Those who knew him will remember his passion for learning, his generosity in sharing knowledge, his dry wit and his unwavering commitment to making s difference. May his memory bring comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
